Second Annual Long Service Awards

Thursday January 01, 1970

Employees and retirees of WSU were given certificates of appreciation at the Long Service Awards hosted in Zamukulungisa site in October, 2018.

This prestigious event was hosted for the second time at the university for retirees from different departments who have been serving the university from a period of 10 – 35 years.

Attending the event was the VC, Professor Rob Midgley, DVC, Prof Sechaba Mahlomaholo, Buffalo City Campus Rector Dr Prince Jaca and Human Resources acting director Siyabulela Myayiza.

Addressing the crowd, Prof Midgley said, “We have recognised the work that you have done. You have contributed to the WSU we have today and for that, we say thank you.”

The VC observed a moment of silence for long serving staff members who have passed on, including Pakama Mazwana who was serving the university in the Marketing, Communications and Advancement office; and Mzuphela Mguli who was a lecturer at the Zamukulungisa site.

He went on to appreciate the progress that the university has made over the years in the hands of these honoraries.

Sending a message of support to the awardees, Nteu representative, Dr Silvia Nkanyuza said, “We spent two-thirds of our lives in this university. Not because we are desperate but because we are dedicated,”

She continued to appreciate the University for recognizing its employees while they are still alive.
One of the awardees, who is also retired, is Law Clinic Director Horrens Nanase Jilata who joined the institution in the year 2000. He expressed his appreciation for being recognised by the University for his Service.

“I did not expect this. The university has made me a very proud man because this is not the second time that they give me an award for my contribution to the university,” he said.

He continued to say, “Serving the university was a great experience for me. Receiving love and appreciation from students and seeing them prosper. Today it is the university that is showing me that love.”

Closing the ceremony, professor Mahlomaholo expressed how grateful he was that the university had taken this opportunity to recognize its people.
